Lessons and Changes Within Leadership

I was listening to a T.D. Jakes sermon this morning while on the treadmill and he said that “with new levels come new devils.”  He went on to explain that success and leadership are actually very painful and arrive with a whole new set of things to overcome.  When God has placed a calling on your life He sets out to equip you for it.  This usually involves challenges and circumstances that will bring you to your knees.   When you are in God’s leadership training you don’t actually know it at first, you don’t get a letter in the mail, no email comes, no memo, no warnings.  Life just starts to kick the crap out of you, challenges come at you, people betray you, and relationships disappoint you. You navigate each situation and you get stronger.  Every time you pick yourself up, you keep going and you never quit.  Then one day you look back and see that there was a reason for all of those things

Success is often viewed as leadership.  People in positions of leadership are seen as having ‘made it’ in some way.  They are thought to be the winners, the ones that have reached their goals and achieved some modicum of prosperity.

A lot of people want to be Leaders; they envision that being a Leader is important, filled with glory and has a lot of perks…perhaps they even think that being a Leader is where the ‘money’ is.  The truth?  Being a Leader, is in fact, more difficult than any other task. Being a good or great Leader?  That requires more work than most people can even fathom.

In order to lead you must be able to follow…happily and humbly.  You must be able to take direction and work within someone else’s framework even if you think you could do it better. If you can’t follow someone else then NOBODY will ever follow you, no matter how amazing you perceive yourself to be.  This is an important skill to instill in young people, the act of following happily and humbly.  I promise you that every great Leader began by following someone else first.

To lead successfully you must also lead by example, you must first have done the task that you now wish to entrust to someone else.  You must have executed that task to fully learn how to do it with excellence and to understand what it feels like to do that particular thing.  If you want to order people around then you better be coming from a place that includes already doing that work, otherwise people will not do as you ask and they will resent you.  If you think you are too good to clean windows or toilets or empty trash, then I suggest you remember where you came from and I suggest that you don’t imagine that someone “beneath” you should do those things.

I don’t care who you are or who you think you are—nobody is beneath you and you are not better than anyone else on this planet.  You may be different and you may have more advanced skills and you may make more money, however you are not ‘better’ than any other human being.  God created all of us equal and to be a great Leader you will do well to remember this and to treat people accordingly.

Real Leaders want to build people up and help them get to the next level in their lives; Leaders know that their job is to leave this planet better than they found it.  They make it their business to INSPIRE other people, not make fun of them or put them down.

I see so many people trying to succeed and trying to lead and they just seem to keep forgetting the source of true leadership which is to lead by example.  You must first FOLLOW the disciplines that you wish to teach, you must walk the walk and succeed there before anyone will listen to you.  Sure, you can lead without doing this and whatever you are trying to do will not hold water, eventually it will collapse on top of you and you won’t prosper to your full ability.

You can’t sleep late, live like a pig, be rude, make fun of people, and lack self-discipline and then get dressed up and go and tell people how to be a success.  People may look like they are listening, yet you will lack the authenticity needed to produce results.  You can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig.  You can even put eye shadow and a dress on it, but it is still a pig.

Gandhi said “be the change in the world that you want to see”, that is really good advice.

Be authentic and don’t try to teach people things that you haven’t already walked through.

Know Your BRAND…

If you intend to have a successful business of any type, including if you are simply an online entrepreneur with a blog, Ebay or Etsy store you better KNOW what your brand is.  Meaning that when I ask you that question an immediate answer must come to mind.  An answer that tells me WHAT you are, what you STAND for.

For instance when I say ‘Harley Davidson’ –you think motorcycles

When I say ‘McDonalds’–you think hamburgers, when I say ‘Starbucks’ — you think coffee.  Those three companies I just named are doing an excellent job with their branding because everyone thinks pretty much the same thing when they hear the company name.

What do people think when they hear your name or your business name?  I promise you that they think SOMETHING, however is it what you want to be known for???  Are the words that come to mind when someone hears your name or the name of your business words that you wish to be remembered by?  I have a friend Tim Davis, he is a branding trainer for Real Estate people and he does a phenomenal job schooling people in the importance of BRAND.  In fact he is so damn good at it then when people say his name, those of us that know him immediately think ‘the branding guy’.  He even has a particular outfit that he is known for when he does training seminars…check him out Tim Davis, Branding Guru .  He knocks BRAND out of the park.  The world could learn a lot from this guy…

When you don’t know what your brand is then neither does anybody else and that becomes instantly detrimental to your business, no matter what you do.  Not understanding your brand is especially damaging to a large organization.  Recently a global organization that has been around for over 100 years has asked for my help in regards to their branding.  The request involves working to get the entire executive team on the same page in regards to what the brand is and whether or not that is being communicated effectively throughout the organization and then further out to the world.  I circulated a list of questions to the executive team, one of which was “What is (the organization’s) brand?  The ENTIRE executive team had a DIFFERENT ANSWER –no two answers were the same.  This is from the Executive Team…the people leading this organization into the future.  This kind of fragmentation in the core team will lead to failure on all fronts.  If you cannot even communicate effectively WHO or WHAT you are how the hell can you do ANYTHING else????

A business functions to fulfill its purpose or mission.  This purpose or mission becomes the DRIVING FORCE or brand of the organization.  This HAS TO BE SOLID!  You have got to know who and what you are in order to execute ANYTHING else.  A strategy for growth cannot be designed without a direction, your direction comes from your brand—who and what you are.  When you do not know who or what you are then you end up running in all kinds of different directions wasting time and energy on things that have nothing to do with your core purpose.

I don’t care if you are selling vintage clothes on ebay, selling crafts you made on Etsy or building a global distribution company– you better know WHO and WHAT you are and then line your strategies up behind that.

If you are a cookie company, make and sell cookies — do not waste your time trying to sell chips, milk and coffee and looking into producing and packaging those items– make and sell COOKIES like your life depended on it.   LIVE into your brand and OWN it!  Make and sell the best damn cookies that anyone ever had.

Part of understanding your brand is that then you know who you are and who you are not.  So if someone comes to you with an opportunity and it doesn’t fit your brand, you simply say NO and move on.  No time and energy wasted.  When you are clueless about who you are then you will find yourself saying yes to things that don’t suit you, simply because you are not crystal clear on your brand.

Get clear on your BRAND folks, your future depends on your ability to communicate it effectively to yourself and every one else…

The First Step To Success Is Failure

The first step to success is failure, and lots of failure. Instead of looking at failure as the be all-end all, start looking at it as a tool for redirection or develop it. It doesn’t mean your necessarily on the wrong path maybe you just became side tracked.

I had been single for a year after a 3 year toxic relationship. I had started to see someone and things went fast. 3 months later I was talked into moving out of state leaving my job and the whole nine yards. Push came to shove and we didn’t end up leaving after I left my job, I found out this person had been actively trying to get me pregnant without my consent, at first he succeeded but I miscarried. He told his family right away that I was pregnant but when I miscarried he refused to tell his family that I had. One lie after another and one manipulation after another came out of the wood work. So I ended it with this person. That didn’t stop him from blowing up my phone and Facebook to the point of blocking him. Two days after I broke up with him someone made a false report to CPS accusing me of using drugs so I voluntarily dropped a urine sample. The case was closed in 3 days. Once I blocked him off of my phone and Facebook he started harassing my friends, once my friends blocked him he started talking bad about me to other people- trying to stir up more drama. Not short from my own personal nightmare.

All-that being said and over with, I am getting back on track with momentum. I am looking for a full time or close to full time job ASAP, I am signing up for real estate classes and license. I am getting my health back on track with healthy eating and exercise. I am 100% content in being single and for once in my life I do not have any what ifs about choosing to be single. If it wasn’t for that 3 month roller coaster ride I wouldn’t of found out how happy I am being on my own, no one to answer to, no one trying to control me and my goals.

In the next few months I will be starting my own blog. If I hadn’t failed so miserably I wouldn’t have grown, and became realigned and not complacent with my goals.

So remember if you find yourself struggling/failing just realize something is telling you to realign with your goals and grow.The next steps are up to you to make your goals become alive.
